My Healthy Body Update, and a Warning About Depo Provera

Hi Friends!

Let me start off with an announcement: I have a teenager!! I’m really not sure how this happened, because there is no possible way 13 years have passed since my first child was born. Yet somehow here we are. February 4, 2005 – February 4, 2018. Yup, that’s 13 years. In just two more years he’ll have a permit and will be in the driver’s seat with me riding shotgun. What a terrifying thought!

Hunter’s birthday meant a day full of pizza, punch and cake, followed by four solid days of leftover cake. A year of fighting Depo-Provera related weight gain gave me some serious junk food trust issues, so I was positive I’d step on the scale and find every pound I’d lost had returned. Instead, I found that I actually lost a little more. In fact, I’d finally broken through the barrier I’d been stuck at since the detox week the first of January.

Time out for a little follow-up to that Depo mention I made above. In June 2016 I decided to go on the Depo shot. I had no real need for birth control, but I found the fact that it stops periods completely to be appealing. I’m not having anymore kids, so that monthly visitor was just a major nuisance I could do without. If I’d known at the time that Depo would destroy my metabolism, I never would’ve gone down that road.

Over the course of six months, I gained nine pounds. It was the most I’d gained since pregnancy. In fact, I was almost back to the post-pregnancy weight I had plateaued at until after my divorce. After the 2016 holidays, I decided to cut out sugars and carbs, figuring my weight would drop back down like it always does. It wasn’t unusual to gain a few lbs over Christmas, and I always lost it within a couple of weeks. But not this time…

A month into 2017 the weight was not budging. So I kicked it into high gear with a week of extreme calorie cutting. Veggies and beans and pretty much nothing else. And you know what? I gained another pound! Then the tornado happened, and then I bought a new house and moved. Stress has always knocked the pounds off, but this time it didn’t. I lost a pound or two, but the moment I put something in my mouth that wasn’t a vegetable, those couple of pounds came back.

I was so frustrated because I’d never had problems with my metabolism like this. I couldn’t eat without gaining weight, and no amount of dieting or calorie cutting was doing any good. I was at a loss for what to do. Then I thought back to when I’d first started having problems, and realized it was shortly after I’d started the Depo shot. So I did some research and found tons of consumer reviews. Bingo…countless stories just like mine. That was early April, and I was due for my next injection at the end of the month. I called and cancelled it immediately, and then started the waiting game.

It took three months before my monthly visitor made its reappearance. And immediately when that happened, I was two pounds lighter. I put my metabolism to the test by eating some unhealthy foods, and found that I didn’t gain anymore weight. And then…I fell down the rabbit hole. I was so excited to be able to EAT again, that I ate whatever I wanted. I even got a craving for Pop-Tarts once after watching Gilmore Girls, so I went out and bought some. Highly processed junk foods are persona non grata in my house, but there I was going to town on them, just because I could.

I took back control of my health after seeing some rather unflattering photos of myself on New Year’s Eve, which I talked about in my Be Healthy, Keep Away the Cancer Diet post. I’d knocked off three of the pounds that I’d gained on Depo, but still had six to go. I’ve had a hard time letting go of that fear that I’m going to eat a piece of chocolate and gain five pounds; that fear that was instilled in me while I was fighting the metabolic disaster that was Depo Provera. So Hunter’s birthday was a huge test.

From January 1st up until this weekend I had managed to shed three pounds. All three of those pounds dropped off in the first week while I was in detox mode. But it’s been holding steady since. I was okay with that, because I’m healthy now and my clothes were all fitting again. I was three pounds away from my normal weight that I was at for seven years prior to Depo. But I’m in my 30’s now and I figured this would just be my new normal.

But lo and behold, a full year after my last Depo shot, my body might finally be back to normal. I stepped on the scale this week and had broken through that barrier by about half a pound. Then this morning, I was another full pound below that. And do you know what I did yesterday? I ate chocolate and pasta and lobster and bread, and split four bottles of wine with three of my friends at Gabriel’s. And I lost a pound! My metabolism is back, baby!

I’m 1.6 pounds away from my former weight, and I don’t even care if I never get there. I feel safe now. I can think about eating that piece of birthday cake, or eating dinner out with friends, and not have that fear in the back of my mind of what the scale will read in the morning. My metabolism is back. My health is back. And I have a victory to celebrate!
